Candida Cleanse: 10-Day Update

Welcome back! I'm not dead! I'm sure you were all very concerned.


The past 10 days have been an absolute experience to say the least. I have given up sugar in the past, usually for about a week at a time to help my body reset. I have never gone longer than 7 days and my goodness it has been fascinating.


Food & Drink

I'm sure your wondering, what can I eat? What is left after you remove sugar, grains, dairy, fruit, and starchy vegetables? I also do not consume conventionally raised meat, adding another layer of complexity to this cleanse.

The first 3 days were a "Fast Track" of sorts. I made a homemade bone broth soup, ate steamed vegetables and fermented foods (i.e. sauerkraut & kimchi). These were trying times. After the first 3 days, I was able to add back in some of my favorite foods: organic eggs with kale salad in the morning and wild caught salmon with roasted portobello mushrooms* for dinner (*mushrooms on this diet are controversial).

There is no alcohol, pop, or sweetened beverages of any kind allowed on this cleanse.

Side Note: I served red wine at work the other day and had the STRONGEST URGE to drink it before I got to the table haha. Therefore, it has been filtered water with lemon and/or chlorophyll, and licorice tea for me. Technically coffee is not recommended on a candida cleanse as it is dehydrating and spikes blood sugar. With the expected die off, I chose not to withdraw from coffee right away, and to instead add MCT oil as a way to make it more medicinal. So far I have been enjoying one cup a day in the mornings.


Supplements

On the Candida Cleanse it is best to rotate your probiotics and antifungals every 7-10 days so the overgrowth does not have a chance to adapt. For the first 10 days I took Echinacea & Goldenseal in a tincture to boost my immune system and MCT oil in my coffee for my first round of antifungals. I have also been taking a Liver Detoxifier from Now Organics to support my liver as it processes the toxic-byproducts of candida die off.


TBH, the first day of MCT oil really knocked me on my ass. I put 2 tablespoons in my coffee (twice the recommended amount because I thought I was tough) and felt the effects almost immediately. I felt like I had the flu with feverish hot flashes, a headache, cramping in my abdomen and lots of gas. This eventually passed after about 2 hours but I was working when it hit me which was unfortunate to say the least! I quickly decided that the recommended amount is probably best.


But why does this happen?

Rapidly killing off candida in your body creates a metabolic reaction that releases over 70 different toxins into your body. Sounds pretty crazy, right? Well before you get scared off, what you may (or may not) have to deal with because of candida die-off will be preferable to what you have to deal with if you let the candida continue to dominate your intestines.

Symptoms that show the candida cleanse and the candida diet are working include:

• Impaired brain function

• Headache

• Fatigue

• Dizziness

• Intestinal distress, including bloating, gas, constipation and nausea

• Sweating and fever

• Sinus infection

• Skin breakouts (not limited to face)

• Typical flu-like symptoms

These symptoms usually clear up in seven to 10 days. The candida is leaving your body, and within just a few weeks, you will notice an increase in energy and focus, as well as relief from other symptoms you have experienced.


For example, I have already experienced less acne, more energy, and less anxiety, IN 10 DAYS!! While these issues likely have multiple root causes, I feel that by removing sugar and focusing more heavily on fat and non-starchy vegetables I have started to regain balance in my body. And it feels GOOD.


For the next ten days I will be changing my antifungal to Fungaffect by St Francis Herb Farm, continuing to take my probiotics and my liver detoxifier.

In terms of food, I will be adding in some non-glutinous grains that are candida friendly (e.g. millet and buckwheat). This will help add some more variety to my meals.
